The Knight Institute coordinates the First-Year Writing Seminar Program, which serves the vast majority of first-year students at Cornell. It also has developed advanced-writing initiatives: it coordinates Writing in the Majors, and supports expository writing courses in the Department of Literatures in English. The Knight Institute is also home to the Writing Workshop, which offers tutorial-based writing classes and tutoring services for writers at all levels, disciplines, and stages of the writing process. In all, more than thirty-five academic departments and programs offer courses associated with the Knight Institute's programs.
Coming from the University of Toronto, where he is the director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, Loewen begins his five-year appointment as the Harold Tanner Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Aug. 1.
